Quell

How Quell Works

Three steps. No app. Every text arrives calm.

Step by Step

1

Sign Up and Get Your Quell Number

You create a Quell account and receive a dedicated phone number. This number acts as the communication bridge between you and the other person. Share this number with the person you need to communicate with — your co-parent, your ex, your roommate, whoever. They'll text this number instead of your personal number.

2

They Text Like Normal

The other person sends a text message to your Quell number. They don't need to download anything, create an account, or change their behavior in any way. They just text a phone number. They can say whatever they want, in whatever tone they want. The raw message goes to Quell — not to you.

3

Quell Rewrites, Then Delivers

Quell instantly rewrites the message in calm, neutral language — preserving all factual content while smoothing out the sarcasm, accusations, and emotional charge. The rewritten version is delivered to you via SMS. You read a calm message. What you send back goes through unmodified — Quell only filters what reaches you. Quell discards both the original and rewritten messages immediately — nothing is stored.

Before & After: Illustrative Examples

These examples demonstrate the type of transformation Quell performs. Actual output may vary. Every example preserves the factual content while removing the emotional charge.

What they send
What you receive
I changed the pickup to noon. If you can't make that work, I guess that says everything.
I changed the pickup to noon. Let me know if that doesn't work.
Must be nice having free time while I handle everything around here.
I'm feeling overwhelmed handling things on my own. Could you take on more?
Dr. Patel's office called, Liam's prescription is ready at CVS on Main. But sure, keep pretending I don't handle everything.

Keep this up and I'm calling my lawyer. I have screenshots of everything.
I'm considering contacting my lawyer. I've saved screenshots.
The kids said they had a great time this weekend. Funny how they never say that about being here.

You're unbelievable. I can't believe I have to explain this to you AGAIN.
I'm frustrated that I have to explain this again.
After everything I've done for this family, this is how you treat me?
I feel unappreciated after everything I've put into this family.

The factual content is always preserved. The edge is always smoothed out.

What Happens to Your Messages

Quell is a one-way filter. Incoming messages from the other person are rewritten in calm language before they reach you. When you reply, your message goes through unmodified.

You control what you send. Quell controls what reaches you.

Privacy: Built-In, Not Bolted On

Quell processes each message in real time and immediately discards both the original and the rewrite. Quell maintains:

Your words pass through Quell. They never stay. This is a deliberate design choice, not a limitation. If you need court-admissible records, that’s a different tool for a different purpose—see our comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the other person know they're texting through Quell?
The other person texts your Quell number instead of your personal number, so they know the number is different. But Quell is transparent to the sender — their messages are filtered before reaching you, and they don't need to know the details. You can explain the service however you'd like.
What if the message is already neutral?
If a message is already calm and straightforward, Quell still processes it to ensure consistency, but the delivered version will be very close to the original. Neutral messages pass through with minimal changes.
How fast is it?
Messages are rewritten and delivered in real time. There's no meaningful delay — it feels like normal texting.
Can Quell handle emergencies?
Quell is not designed for emergencies. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 directly. For non-emergency messages, Quell processes content in real time and factual content — times, locations, requests — is always preserved. You should always have a direct communication channel available as backup for urgent situations.
What about group texts or multiple people?
Quell currently filters incoming messages from one person. If you need to filter messages from multiple people, you would need separate Quell numbers for each relationship.
Can I use Quell for someone other than a co-parent?
Yes. Quell works for anyone receiving difficult texts. Co-parents, ex-partners, roommates, family members — anyone who needs incoming messages filtered before they reach you.
What does $10/month include?
Everything. Unlimited incoming messages filtered. No message caps, no tiers, no add-ons. $10/month flat. Cancel anytime.
Is there a free trial?
There's no free trial, but if the other person doesn't join within 30 days, you get a full refund. At $10/month with cancel-anytime, the first month is risk-free.
What if I need court documentation too?
Quell is not a documentation tool — it prioritizes privacy and doesn't store messages. If you need court-admissible records, use a tool like OurFamilyWizard or TalkingParents for that purpose. Many people use a documentation tool for the legal record and Quell for daily communication peace.
What if important context is lost in the rewrite?
Quell preserves all factual content — dates, times, locations, requests, questions. What's smoothed out is the emotional charge: the jabs, the sarcasm, the guilt trips. The informational substance of every message comes through intact.
